Branding Building Blocks: Where to Start Your Personal Branding Journey
Building a personal brand can be intimidating, trying to give yourself guidelines without pigeonholing yourself into a certain archetype is a tall task. Thankfully, that is not what a personal brand is. With the right strategy, thoughtfulness and foresight, it can be the most freeing thing in the world.
Though, the idea of figuring out where to start and what direction to take can lead to so many questions of what is best and what works in the world. This is what I have spent months learning (so I can help!).
During a consultation, there are a ton of questions I have thoughtfully crafted to be able to understand you and what you have to offer. There are a few themes throughout these questions, which make a great starting place on where to start a personal brand and how to cultivate it to help you become more successful.
- Self Discovery – Identifying your strengths, values, passions, skills and unique qualities. What do you want to be known for? What do you want people to say about you when you’re not around? Having a clear understanding of yourself and who you are is an excellent starting place for creating your personal brand.
- Craft Your Brand’s Story – Ideally, each person will have layers of closeness in relationships. Your brand’s story is the elevator pitch you will give others on your own personal path through life. Creating a brief, compelling narrative that communicates who you are and what you stand for is a place to start building your personal brand for yourself and for others. Authenticity is key – people are drawn to stories that are genuine and relatable, so be yourself, but better B).
- Find consistent themes – searching through constants in your life can be an AWESOME diving board into the pool of personal branding. What are things you have said about yourself since high school? What has your mom said about you since you were a child? These things are often indicators of who we REALLY are. (it’s not a phase, mom). Recognizing these things, spinning them into the best parts of your narrative and capitalizing on them is the backbone of your personal brand.
PLEASE remember this is not something that can be cultivated overnight, and not something that is a mask on top of your true self. It is recognizing your greatest qualities and showcasing them to the world.
Truly I would LOVE to help you create something amazing out of what is already existing (and awesome).
This really resonates with me and my being. My brand is my story and this brings everything into perspective Thanks!
Wow! This is an awesome starting place for building my own personal brand. Thanks, Allison!
